Alerts & Check-ins
How SOS alerts work
When SOS is triggered (either from the app or pendant), the following happens immediately:
- The alert is received by our servers
- Emergency contacts are notified by SMS in priority order
- Each SMS includes the person's name, their phone number, and a respond link
- The alert is logged in the history with time and location
We use two independent SMS gateways to ensure delivery even if one has issues.
How contacts respond to an alert
Each SOS SMS contains a Respond link unique to that alert. When a contact taps it:
- A page opens showing the person's name and alert time
- If the person has a phone number saved, a Call them button is shown
- The contact enters their name and taps I'm responding
- They are immediately taken to Google Maps showing the person's location
- The account holder receives an SMS: "Emma has acknowledged Dave's SOS alert and is responding."
The respond link is unique to each alert — it cannot be guessed or used by anyone who didn't receive that SMS.
Resolving an alert
Once the situation is under control, mark the alert as resolved so contacts know all is well.
There are two ways to resolve:
- Dashboard — if there is an active SOS a red banner appears at the top. Click All safe — resolve this alert.
- Alert history — go to My People → History and click Resolve on any unresolved alert.
When resolving you can add an optional comment (e.g. "Called Dave, all fine. False alarm."). This comment is included in the confirmation SMS sent to all contacts:
"✓ IAMOK: The alert for Dave has been resolved by Karen. Called Dave, all fine. - iamok.nz"
Check-in intervals
The check-in interval is how often the app prompts the person to confirm they're OK. Available options:
- Every 15 or 30 minutes — for high-risk work environments
- Every 1, 2, or 4 hours — for general lone worker use
- Every 8 or 12 hours — for daily monitoring
- Once daily — for elderly family members
Change the interval any time via My People → Edit person.
Missed check-in alerts
If the person doesn't respond to a check-in prompt within their set interval, the system automatically fires a "missed check-in" alert to their emergency contacts.
The SMS includes the person's name and their phone number so contacts can call them directly.
This is checked automatically every 5 minutes by our system.
Viewing alert history
All alerts, check-ins and events are logged permanently. To view:
- Go to My People
- Click History on the person's card
You can filter by alert type (SOS, missed check-in, test). Unresolved alerts are highlighted in red. Resolved alerts show who resolved them, when, and any comment left.
